LONDON [Peter Paul Media] — Multiple people were stabbed Friday in central London shortly before a suspect was shot dead by police, officials said. The incident is still unfolding but it appears it happened on London Bridge, a busy section for both locals and tourists alike.
Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations, Neil Basu, confirmed during a press conference that “A male suspect was shot by specialist armed officers from City of London Police and I can confirm that this suspect died at the scene.”
“Public safety is obviously our top priority and we will be enhancing police patrols in the City and across London,” he added. Basu said the conditions of those injured was not yet known.
Police earlier confirmed on Twitter that a “number of people have been stabbed” but provided no other details. “Police were called at 1:58pm to a stabbing at premises near to London Bridge,” a statement read.
Police are asking those who may have taken pictures or videos to submit those files online. There are lots of unverified media posts related to the attack online at this hour, including one picture of what appears to be a man holding a knife in his hand.
Authorities have asked people to stay away from the area. London Bridge is currently closed between Fenchurch Street to the north and Southwark Street to the south, according to London’s traffic news on Twitter.
