HARTLAND, N.B. [Peter Paul Media] — The Hartland Covered Bridge is renowned as the world’s longest covered bridge, stretching 1,282 feet across the Saint John River.
Built in 1901, this architectural marvel has stood as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and a cherished symbol of Canadian heritage. However, recent developments have raised concerns about its structural integrity, leading to necessary closures and restoration efforts.
In October 2023, a routine structural survey identified a “downward bend” in the bridge’s structure, prompting immediate closure for safety reasons. This finding was significant, as the bridge had previously undergone various repairs and maintenance to preserve its condition.
The closure has impacted local traffic and tourism, as the bridge is a popular attraction for visitors exploring New Brunswick’s rich history. During our visit, the bridge was closed to traffic.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) has initiated plans for comprehensive restoration to address the identified issues. These efforts aim to reinforce the bridge’s structural components while maintaining its historical authenticity. The restoration is expected to be a lengthy process, with no definitive reopening date announced as of early 2025.
The closure has had a notable impact on the Hartland community. Local businesses, particularly those in the tourism sector, have experienced a decline in visitors. The bridge’s status as a National Historic Site and a Provincial Heritage Place underscores its cultural significance, not only to Hartland but also to New Brunswick and Canada as a whole.
While the restoration of the Hartland Covered Bridge presents challenges, it also offers an opportunity to preserve a vital piece of Canadian history for future generations. The community’s resilience and the commitment of provincial authorities to maintain this landmark reflect a shared dedication to heritage conservation.
As restoration efforts continue, residents and visitors alike await the day when the Hartland Covered Bridge will once again span the Saint John River, welcoming all who cross its path.
