Guyanese president touts development, history in uplifting, inspirational speech

BRAMPTON [Peter Paul Media] — President Irfaan Ali drew hundreds of members of the Guyanese diaspora to the Pearson Convention Centre on Saturday, where supporters gathered to hear updates on Guyana’s economic growth, regional partnerships and ties with overseas communities.

The event highlighted the growing relationship between Canada and Guyana as members of the diaspora packed the banquet hall waving Guyanese flags and applauding references to investment, energy development and education opportunities.

Ali told attendees that overseas Guyanese communities remain an important part of the country’s future. “Wherever Guyanese live around the world, you remain connected to the development of our country,” he said. “Your ideas, your investments and your support continue to shape Guyana’s progress.”

Attendees were asked to email quesions and concerns to the Guyanese Consulate in the weeks prior. The president said the government received nearly 600 responses ahead of the engagement, with many questions focused on investment, migration, housing and economic opportunities rather than crime-related concerns.

“I’ve been coming to diaspora engagements for decades and the top issue used to be security,” Ali said during the event. “Today, people are asking: how can we invest, how can we own a home, and how can we be part of the development of Guyana?”

The president said the 159 people who emailed personal concerns to the consulate would be receiving replies by the end of the day.

During the event, Ali promoted large-scale development plans including the proposed Silica City project, which he described as “a city 50 years ahead of its time.” He said the government wants at least 25 per cent of the development dedicated to diaspora needs and investment opportunities.

Ali also pointed to ongoing construction projects including a new Demerara River bridge, transportation upgrades and expanded healthcare and digital services.

He encouraged overseas Guyanese to help promote and invest in the country’s future. “You can be part of this story by playing your role, by positive messaging, by promoting Guyana,” he told attendees.
