[Peter Paul Media] — Most of the $4.1M CAD estate of late South African President Nelson Mandela will be left to the children and grandchildren of his first and second wife, a copy of his last will and testament released Monday said.
Winnie Mandela married to Nelson for 38 years, 27 of which while he was imprisoned, was left out, a copy of the will, dated October 12, 2004, shows.
His third wife, Graça Machel, gets the properties, cars, jewellery, and artifacts and works from his Houghton family residence. She has rights to half of the estate if she claims it within three months, the document said.
Houghton is a wealthy suburb just northeast of Johannesburg—the South African capital—which houses the Mandela family residence and headquarters of his foundation.
He expressed his wish for the family residence to be used ‘As a place of gathering of the Mandela family in order to maintain its unity long after my death,” in his final testament.
“I am particularly concerned about the educational needs of the children of Qunu in respect of scholarships and bursaries,” the will and testament said. Donations are later expected to be made to schools he attended during his childhood on behalf of his estate.
South Africa’s first black president died on December 5 at the age of 95.
